Term

Receiver

The player who receives and returns the serve.

The player who receives the serve and hits it back (Section 2, Definitions). The serve goes into the opponent's service court diagonally across from the server (7.E). In doubles, the team's score decides who the correct receiver is and which side each player stands on (5.B.1, 5.B.3).

The serve must always bounce once before it is returned (10.A, 10.A.1, Two-Bounce Rule). If the server and receiver are in the correct positions but a player who is not the correct receiver returns the serve, it is a fault (5.C.1.c).
