Serving

After scoring, only the serving team switches sides

When the serving team scores, the server and partner switch sides, and the same server keeps serving. The receiving team does not move.

When the serving team wins a rally and scores a point, the server and their partner switch sides (left and right). Then the same server keeps serving, from the other service court (5.B.5, 5.B.6).

After a point, only the two on the serving team switch sides

The receiving team does not move

Points are scored only when the serving team wins a rally, so the receiving team's score does not change (4.A). Positions are set by the team's score, so the receiving team does not switch sides (5.B.3). Even when they win the rally and the server changes, the receiving team stays where they are.

How to find the right position

The right position is set by the team's score (5.B.3).

  • The player who served first in the game is on the right when the team's score is even (0, 2, 4...), and on the left when it is odd (1, 3, 5...) (5.B.3)
  • The partner is on the other side (5.B.3)

If you are not sure whether you should be on the right or the left, you can check with this rule.

Position rules apply only to the serve and the return

Only the player serving and the player receiving the serve must stand in a set position. The server's partner and the receiver's partner can stand anywhere, inside or outside the court, as long as they are on their own team's side. Once the rally starts, everyone can move freely (5.B.4).
