Rally Scoring

A way of scoring where the team that wins the rally gets a point, whether or not it was serving.

A way of scoring where the player or team that wins a rally gets 1 point, whether or not they were serving (14.A.2). In regular pickleball, only the serving side can score (4.A, Only the serving team scores).

In the 2026 rulebook, rally scoring is a "Provisional Rule" that can be used in both singles and doubles (14.A).

How it differs from regular scoring

  • The score is called with two numbers: "server's score, receiver's score" (14.A.3)
  • Even in doubles, only one player per team serves. If the serving side loses a rally, it is a side out right away (14.A.5)
  • After a side out, the player standing correctly on the right for the team's score serves (14.A.4)

The 2026 change

Under the rules up to 2025, the receiving side could not score the game-winning point (USA Pickleball). From 2026, whoever wins any rally gets the point, so the receiving side can also end the game by winning a rally (14.A.2, USA Pickleball).

In tournaments

Tournaments can choose rally scoring, but it cannot be used in double-elimination doubles events, 2026 Golden Ticket tournaments, or the National Championships (15.C.2).

How to read the sources: numbers like (8.F.4) are rulebook sections, and links are outside sources. An "Author's note" is the author's personal experience, not an official rule.
